Our Wines
2003
Black Estate Shiraz - SOLD OUT !!!
This wine was made in the middle of the drought, and is our second vintage.
The growing season was quite warm, and very dry. Our vineyard received
only about 1/3rd of the normal average rainfall. The berries were very
small and yields were quite low.
As a result of the extremely dry season, this wine shows more intense
characteristics - hints of blackberry and raspberry on the nose, with chocolate
and liquorice edges. The mouth feel is quite full and savoury, with
balanced tannins and fruit.
The alcohol level is 14.0%. Contains 8.2 standard drinks.
2004 Black Estate Shiraz - SOLD OUT !!!
The 2004 growing season was relatively kind to us. While the drought
was still present, the grapes enjoyed a relatively mild growing season, and
there was adequate water to maintain the vineyard in good condition.
Yields were better, with 4 tonnes picked in late March.
After picking, crushing and fermenting, the wine was stored in French and
American oak barriques for 12 months prior to bottling.
This wine is developing nicely in the bottle, with a nose of
chocolates/vanilla/cocoa. On the palate, the wine is well rounded, with
hints of blackberry and liquorice, as well as dark chocolate and cocoa.
This wine will continue to develop over the next few years with further
cellaring.
Alcohol level is 14.0%. Approximately 8.2 standard drinks.
2005 Black Estate Shiraz
The 2005 growing season was also a good one. The vines benefited from a
warm Summer, and a long mild Autumn.
Yields were very good given the size of our plantings, with 4 tonnes picked in late March.
There was surplus fruit at the end of the day, which we kept to make a vintage
port (see below).
After picking, crushing and fermenting, the wine was stored in mostly French oak barriques for 12 months prior to bottling. This
is our first wine made under screw-caps to preserve its freshness.
This wine is bigger than all of our previous vintages, reflecting the
increased ripeness of the fruit and the increased alcohol content. The
wine exhibits a nice fruit-driven nose with a hint of oak. The palate
reveals rich berry characteristics and fine tannins.
This wine will continue to develop over the medium to long term with further
cellaring.
Alcohol level is 15.0%. Approximately 8.9 standard drinks.
2005
Black Estate 'Seven Rows' Fortified
Shiraz
After picking our quota of fruit from the 2005 vintage to make our Black
Estate Shiraz, we found that we still had seven rows of fruit still on the
vine.
We kept the fruit on the vine for a further 3 weeks to increase the baume. We picked it in late April, just as the berries were starting
to 'bag'.
The resultant juice was crushed and given a primary fermentation until it
achieved the correct residual sugar levels. Brandy Spirit was added to
stop the ferment, and the wine was then filtered and bottled immediately.
The wine was bottled at an 18% alcohol level.
Seven Rows Fortified Shiraz is available in both 375ml and 750ml bottles. While showing good fruit characteristics now,
Seven Rows will definitely
improve with age.
